Dolj county is situated in the south-west part of Romania is on the banks of a Jiu river and on the left bank of the Danube. To the south, Danube is the border between Romania and Bulgaria. It lies at the crossing of the 44 th parallel North with the 23 th meridian East. Its neighbors are: Mehedinti in the W and NW, Gorj in the N, Valcea in the NW, Olt in the E and Bulgaria in the S. This county has a total area of 7414 sq km, and a population of about 741 852 inhabitants, of which 48,86% are men and 51,14% are women. The population density is 100,9 inhabitants\sq km. The County residence is Craiova. Other important cities in this county, are: Bailesti, Calafat, Filiasi, Segarcea. There are 94 small towns and 380 villages.
